Students build on the foundational art skills developed in Kindergarten through 2nd grade while exploring new artistic concepts such as blending, perspective, and composition. They engage in a combination of choice-based, student-led, and teacher-led art projects that foster creativity and self-expression. Using materials such as markers, colored pencils, yarn, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, clay, and collage, students are encouraged to experiment with techniques and develop their God-given creativity to create meaningful and thoughtful artwork.
Sixth-grade art focuses on building independence as artists while introducing the importance of brainstorming and planning in the creative process. Projects are primarily teacher-led to teach new skills but allow for student choice to encourage personal expression. Students are challenged to begin exploring their own artistic style and creating meaningful artwork. A variety of sketchbook activities and hands-on projects help students grow in technique and confidence while discovering how their creativity can glorify God.
Middle school art is a semester-long elective where students build on their existing art skills while exploring new, more advanced artistic concepts. A wide variety of projects introduce students to different artistic mediums such as paint, colored pencil, ink, collage, and clay. Students maintain a sketchbook throughout the semester to plan, sketch, and track their growth as artists. This class encourages creativity, skill development, and the discovery of personal artistic interests while honoring God through their artwork.
This course is available every year and can be taken up to two times, though it is considered an introductory course. Throughout this course, students seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in their life experiences to create meaningful works of art. Students explore a variety of two and three-dimensional media such as drawing, painting, pastels, printmaking, digital arts, sculpture, and ceramics. Students study past and present artists as well as the elements and principles of design with an overall focus on composition and communication through art and what it means to be a Christian in all aspects of the arts.
This course is designed for the experienced artist who is looking to grow deeper in Christ through the arts. Art history concepts will be explored alongside design theories using a variety of media. The student chooses what and how to study art techniques in this course and creates their own syllabus to meet their artistic goals.
This specialized course is offered every other year or more depending on student interest. Using clay as a medium, students will study hand-building techniques as well as wheel throwing; though hand-built methods will be emphasized. Students design and craft both functional and decorative ceramic arts.
