Visual Arts

Elementary K-2

Students are introduced to a variety of materials and create work based on authors and illustrators such as Eric Carle, Peter Reynolds, and Max Lucado. Drawing, Painting, weaving, sculpting, and printmaking will be explored. Students are encouraged to explore their creativity in both choice-based and teacher-led lessons. Class starts and/or ends with prayer as we explore our creativity and God-given abilities in art.

Elementary 3-6

Artists are encouraged to explore a variety of materials and techniques in a student-centered classroom called “Teaching for Artistic Behavior” or TAB. The approach is this: The answer is YES, what’s the question? Kiddos can choose to work with wire, fibers, drawing, painting, clay, recycled materials, printing, etc. at centers. In a TAB environment students learn to create, collaborate, problem solve, and are encouraged to try new materials and techniques weekly. Oftentimes, centers are aligned with the classroom teacher’s lessons so that students can apply their knowledge of content through the arts (i.e. egyptian Art). Our God-given abilities and skills are celebrated while students are encouraged to try new ways to glorify God in the art room.

6th Grade Art

In 6th grade art, there is a healthy blend of both TAB (choice based art with centers) and teacher-directed lessons. Students explore art history and artifacts, study local artists, and get hands on with a variety of materials. Students are encouraged to plan, sketch, and further develop skills through sketchbook activities and projects. The art of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Asia will be emphasized.

Art 1

This course is available every year and can be taken up to two times, though it is considered an introductory course. Students explore a variety of two and three dimensional media such as drawing, painting, pastels, printmaking, digital arts, sculpture and ceramics. Students study past and present artists as well as the elements and principles of design with an overall focus on composition and communication through art and what it means to be a Christian in all aspects of the arts.

Art 2

This course is available each year and can be taken multiple times.  Students are consistently encouraged to use their God-given abilities to create meaningful works of art that bring Him honor and edify the believers. Drawing, Painting, and Ceramics (using hand built methods) are studied in depth.  Students combine the natural processes of play with their understanding of two and three-dimensional design to create personalized art that demonstrates their unique creative abilities.

Advanced Art/Independent Study

This course is designed for the experienced artist who is looking to grow deeper in Christ through the arts. Art history concepts will be explored alongside design theories using a variety of media. The student chooses what and how to study art techniques in this course and creates their own syllabus to meet their artistic goals.

Ceramics

This specialized course is offered every-other year or more depending on student interest. Using clay as a medium,   students will study hand-building techniques as well as wheel throwing; though hand built methods will be emphasized. Students design and craft both functional and decorative ceramic arts.
